Mr. Butters' Story

Mr. Butters was black and brown, long-bodied and low to the ground, a Dachshund.
He came with fear in his eyes and a tremble in his tail.

The lady dachshund in the house didn’t bark at him. 

Lady Bea just sniffed him, walked away, and returned to her dog bed by the fireplace.
Silently, she waited while he cowered under a chair, shivering.

Then, inch by inch, he moved closer to the fireplace.

Lady Bea remained perfectly still, as if frozen in place.

Her eyes locked onto the stranger, who stood awkwardly in her house.

The quivering body, bathed in the flickering orange glow of the hearth, slowly warmed as he approached.

The crackling fire sent waves of heat that chased away the chill, and the scent of burning wood filled the air.

Still, she did not move.

Slowly, he stepped into her bed, barely moving... then plunk.

His body eased into place in the dog bed, spooning about her long body as if that dog bed had been made for the two.

She gave the new housemate a sniff, rested her head on his back, and closed her eyes in sleep.

And slowly, Mr. Butters learned that love could be quiet.
