The Liberty Bell: A Story of Courage and Freedom
What the Liberty Bell Teaches Us About Liberty
Note from Malika: Before you buy all those hot dogs, burgers, and buns to grill and serve on a red, white, and blue picnic tablecloth, overloaded with baked beans, coleslaw, and a bag of chips, I like to take a moment to remind my fellow Americans that the first Fourth of July was no picnic.
In a few weeks, the United States of America will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. What an amazing event to share with family and friends.
To respectfully honor the brave men and women in our country's history, I am unveiling wearable pages from history books to support continued awareness of American civics. (No Non-cents Nanna style - blogger since 2011.)
Wearable pages from history will not be officially unveiled until the week of June 22, 2026. However, you may be among those who witness dozens of memory-making items published on Malika Bourne Legacy over the next few days. Your feedback via the contact form will be appreciated and noted. And if you like what you see, please share on social media.

1. The Liberty Bell: Why It Matters
The Liberty Bell is more than a symbol. It rang at a moment when ordinary people made an extraordinary choice. They risked their homes, their safety, and their futures to say:
We choose freedom.
The crack in the bell reminds us that liberty isn’t perfect. It carries scars — just like the people who fought for it.
Freedom is precious because it was paid for with courage.
2. Why the Bell Rang
On July 8, 1776, the Liberty Bell rang out over Philadelphia. It wasn’t a celebration. It was a warning to the world:
A new nation had chosen liberty, even at great cost.
The people who gathered that day didn’t know what would happen next. But they showed up anyway.
That’s what courage looks like.
3. The Crack Tells a Story
The Liberty Bell’s crack isn’t a mistake. It’s a reminder.
Freedom is fragile. Freedom takes work. Freedom can break if we don’t care for it.
The crack shows us that liberty survives because people protect it — together.
4. What the Inscription Means
Around the top of the bell are the words:
“Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land.”
To proclaim something means to speak it, live it, and pass it on. Liberty isn’t something we keep to ourselves. It’s something we share.
Every generation has a part in carrying it forward.
5. What Kids Should Know
Freedom didn’t just happen. People had to:
-
stand up
-
speak out
-
work together
-
take risks
The Liberty Bell reminds us that bravery isn’t loud — sometimes it’s a steady, determined choice.
Freedom grows when we show up for each other.
6. A Message for Today’s Young Patriots
You don’t have to be famous to make a difference. The people who fought for liberty were regular folks — shopkeepers, farmers, printers, teachers, parents.
Courage lives in everyday people.
And every time you choose kindness, fairness, or truth, you help liberty ring a little louder.
⭐
When the Liberty Bell rang, it wasn’t just a sound. It was a promise.
A promise that freedom is worth protecting. A promise that courage can change the world. A promise that every generation — including yours — has a role to play.
Wear these shirts as a reminder: Liberty lives in the choices we make.
