What Your Child's Teacher Wishes You Knew Before School Starts

I've been around long enough to have watched a lot of children walk into classrooms for the first time. And I've talked to enough teachers over the years to know there are a few things they wish every parent knew — but rarely say out loud.

So let me say it.

Your child watches how you say goodbye.

When you drop your child off at school...

If you linger, look worried, or say "are you sure you'll be okay?" — they'll wonder if they should be worried too. A confident, cheerful goodbye — even if you have to fake it a little — tells them this place is safe, and I'll be back. Practice your goodbye face in the car if you need to.

 

Teachers can't help what they don't know.

If your child has a food allergy, a sensory sensitivity, a hard morning at home, a dog that just died — tell the teacher. A quick note or email at the start of the year isn't being "that parent." It's giving your child's teacher the tools to actually help. They want to help. Let them.

Reading at home matters more than you think.

Not flashcards. Not apps. Just you, reading aloud together — even after they can read themselves. Kids who are read to have larger vocabularies, stronger comprehension, and a relationship with stories that no curriculum can manufacture. Ten minutes a night. That's it. Consistency is a gift.

Same bedtime. Same morning routine. Same pickup time. Children who know what to expect have more emotional energy left over for learning. Chaos at home shows up in the classroom — not as bad behavior, but as exhaustion.

Your attitude about school becomes theirs.

If you say "I hated math too," — they will too. If you say, "I wonder what you'll discover today," — they'll start to wonder. You are their first and most lasting teacher. What you believe about learning, they will believe about themselves.
