Butterflies in the Tummy: 5 Ways to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety in Kids Ages 5–10
You know that feeling. Your child woke up fine, ate breakfast fine — and then, somewhere between putting on their shoes and walking out the door, the butterflies arrived.
Back-to-school anxiety is real. It's not drama. It's not a weakness. It's a nervous system doing exactly what it's supposed to do when something feels big and unknown. And for kids ages 5–10, a new school year can feel very big indeed.

Here's what actually helps.
1. Name the butterflies — don't shoo them away
When a child says, "My tummy hurts," resist the urge to say, "You'll be fine!" Instead, try: "Those are butterflies. They show up when something matters to you. That means you care — and that's a good thing." Naming the feeling takes away some of its power.
2. Build a "first day" ritual
Predictability is calming. A special breakfast, a particular song in the car, a handshake or hug at the door — small rituals signal safety. Kids who know what to expect feel more in control, even when everything else is new.
3. Let them carry something familiar
A small comfort item in a backpack pocket — a smooth stone, a folded note from you, a tiny keepsake — can be a quiet anchor during a loud day. They don't have to show anyone. It's just there.

4. Talk about the good stuff the night before
Instead of "are you nervous?", try "what's one thing you're curious about?" or "who do you hope sits near you?" Curiosity is the antidote to dread. Help them find one small thing to look forward to.
5. Debrief gently — not immediately
When they get home, don't lead with "how was it?" Give them 20 minutes to decompress first. A snack, some quiet, no questions. Then ask: "What was one thing that surprised you today?" You'll get a real answer.
Every child carries something into that classroom on the first day — hope, worry, excitement, and yes, butterflies. Your job isn't to make the butterflies disappear. It's to help them fly in formation.
