Father–Daughter Craft: Turning a Distressed Box Into a Memory That Lasts

🎨 Father–Daughter DIY: How to Refinish the Box Together

1. Go Shopping Together

Let her pick:

• the paint color

• the brushes

• the sandpaper

• maybe a sticker or embellishment

This is part of the ritual — the choosing.

2. Prep the Box

• Remove the heart locket from the lid.

• Untie the twine and replace it with a ribbon or chain she loves.

• Open the lid and gently remove the glass frame backing.

• Set the music box insert aside.

3. Sand the Wood

Use:

• 120 grit to remove the distressed finish

• 220 grit to smooth it Wipe clean.

Let her help. Let her feel the transformation.

4. Paint the Box

Acrylic or chalk paint works beautifully.

Let her paint the first stroke. Let her choose the color. Let her add dots, stripes, hearts, or her name.

5. Add Your Photo

Slip a picture of the two of you into the frame under the lid. This becomes the heartbeat of the box.

6. Reassemble

• Replace the glass

• Insert the music box
